Staff Scientist in Indoor Air Analytics
The vacancy is at the Department of Civil Engineering, see at Aalto University . In accordance with Aalto University's living strategy, , our call is to support the shaping of a sustainable future using Aalto's three core values: responsibility, courage, and collaboration. Currently, the department has 16 professors supported by lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 115. The department and school have well-equipped research infra and access to national scientific computing services. We are located at Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo where several research institutions and organizations have their laboratories.
The duties in the position
  • development, maintenance and monitoring of the Indoor Air Analytics, support chemical analyzes and measurement methods in laboratories and analyzes related to paid service operations in Aalto University's School of Engineering together with professors and technical personnel.
  • active promotion, leadership and management of competitive funding applications to support the laboratory.
  • active networking and collaboration with other research teams in the field
  • active research work which results in publications in high impact journals
  • instruction of B.Sc., M.Sc. and D.Sc. students in topics related to Indoor Air Analytics
  • contribution to teaching and instruction/supervision of master- and doctoral-level students in Indoor Air Analytics
  • teaching Indoor Air Analytics in master's level courses

We are looking for applicants with
  • a doctoral degree in Indoor environment technology or a related field, with emphasis in chemistry
  • technical know-how in/ experience in collecting samples, performing analyses (Indoor Air Analytics) and interpreting results as well as general maintenance the following laboratory equipments:

  • Gas chromatography- mass spectrometry
  • Emission chambers (study of chemical emissions)
  • Particle meters and online chemical contaminant meters
  • Various microscopes (e.g. electron microscope and fluorescence microscope)
  • Andersen impactor and RCS equipment

  • capability to learn the use of the Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry
  • experience in teaching and advising students' theses or mentoring junior staff
  • capability for both independent and teamwork
  • high level communication skills, fluent oral and written English
  • in addition, experience in project management and researcher experience in national and international projects (e.g. EU and Academy of Finland). The majority of salary comes from projects.

The successful applicant will join a young and dynamic team of world-class researchers at Aalto University's School of Engineering funded by the Academy of Finland and European Research Council. Aalto University is a public research university which was established in 2010 after a merger of three major Finnish universities. It is consistently highly ranked in the areas of science, art, technology and business. The University's main campus is located in Espoo, approximately 15 minutes by metro from the center of Helsinki. Helsinki is a safe, clean, green capital city with a very high quality of life. Salary and contract terms
The Staff Scientist position will be permanent. The starting salary will be set according to Salary System for Universities. The starting date can be negotiated but it should be in May 2024 at the latest.
