Description of the position
We are looking for a Research Scientist to conduct (technology) research and perform independent and collaborative 6G-related research on Wireless networks and networking technologies with teams from both Elisa and the University of Oulu. Co-managing and contributing to existing 6G research projects in collaboration with Elisa’s business units, as well as with various partners and academic institutes, will be part of your duties. Additionally, you will co-supervise doctoral researchers and students in the field of research. Your responsibilities may also include teaching some courses in the field, based on mutual agreement and your own interests, as well as the needs of the curriculum. Similarly, you are expected to assist in preparing research projects and grant proposals and acquire competitive research funding.
The exact research area(s) will be defined based on the strengths and interests of the candidate, but the work is expected to integrate physical layer and higher layer networking considerations to enable the use of multipoint transmission and reception technologies (distributed MIMO, cell-free massive MIMO) within the general framework of 6G radio access networks. This would include topics such as assessing requirements for synchronization, the impacts on the radio access network architecture, integration of sub-6GHz with higher frequencies, and applications of different machine learning technologies in 6G access networks.
What do we expect from you in order to succeed?
- PhD (or Dr. Sc.) degree, preferably from the area of wireless communications and networks, but degrees in other disciplines can be considered as well
- Solid research mentality and skills with an attitude of producing concrete results
- Strong background and understanding of physical layer, and experience or knowledge of radio resource management (RRM) functions in wireless communication networks
- Experience with wireless technologies and network development analysis including analytical, simulations, lab testing and/or field measurements
- Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory to support you in collaboration and discussions with various stakeholders
The position is based in Oulu and would require some travelling to Elisa headquarters in Helsinki. Travelling cost is fully covered by Elisa.

Salary
The position is fixed-term for 3 years and starts as soon as possible or upon mutual agreement.
With University of Oulu the salary will be based on levels 05-06 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). With Elisa, the salary with be competitive aligned with candidate’s experience, plus up to 10% bonus for good performance. A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
