OsoiteMaster Thesis, 30 HP: Stability in low and medium voltage electric systems for ships
The Low Voltage Direct Current system (LVDC) is a mature system for ship power grids, e.g. Saab Kockums is using this solution on submarines. Saab Kockums is taking steps to develop this system to Medium Voltage Direct Current system (MVDC) to use this technology on surface ships in order to reduce the weight and volume of cables and equipment and also decrease the magnetic signature of the electric distribution net.
Background
MVDC-systems for ships in general and naval vessels in particular is not yet fully developed. Saab Kockums wants to introduce this technology to the next generations of corvettes and frigates. Furthermore, for future naval ships there is a need to evaluate a propulsion system that is carbon dioxide free to meet future requirements from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system shall have minimal losses and use new type of fuels in an efficient way.
Description of the master thesis
This master thesis aims at compare a DC-system with an AC-system from electric power grid stability perspective. Furthermore, a comparison between a low voltage and a medium voltage system shall be made. A new type of power producers and consumers will be introduced which will affect the power grid. The thesis shall implement a simulation model taking into account the increase of power from 30 MW that is the capacity of technology today to 60 MW which will be needed on new naval vessels.

This Master Thesis is suitable for one or two students with interest in electric power engineering. You are at the end of your electrical engineering masters education and about to start your Master Thesis work for 30 HP.
This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
What you will be a part of
The section for Electrical Systems for Surface Ships is located in Karlskrona and is a part of the area Mission Systems, Electrical and Automation within Design and Engineering at Saab Kockums. You will work together with a team consisting of 16 system and design engineers. Electrical Systems is responsible for the electrical systems onboard a naval surface vessel as electrical propulsion, power supply, distribution, battery systems, lightning and cables.
